Ages & Stages

Every child develops differently, but the following milestones can help you determine whether your child is gaining speech and language skills at an appropriate level for his or her age. Children typically do not master all items in a category until they reach the upper age range.

18 Months

  • Uses 10 to 20 words.

  • Understand simple words like "eat and "sleep".

  • Requests objects by pointing and vocalizing or possibly using a word approximation.

2 Year

  • Comprehends approximately 500 words.

  • Uses 2 to 3 words to talk about and ask for things.

  •  Consistently uses initial consonants (although some are misarticulated).

3 Years

  •  Uses many sentences that have 4 or more words.

  • Makes conversational repairs when the listener has not understood what was said.

4 Years

  • Uses the same grammar as the rest of the family.

  • Produces consonants with 90% accuracy.

  • Can discuss emotions and feelings effectively.

5 Years

  • Has a receptive vocabulary of approximately 13,000 words.

  •  Uses sentences of 6 or more words including compound sentences.
